First, snaps to our blogmistress for launching "frillseekers" for all things frilly, frumpy, and frivolous!
I have three points of business:
1) I am in dire need of some new music-- particularly the type that is a far cry from the pathos driven stuff I usually listen to. Any suggestions for good songs to rock out to?
2) Re: Project Runway. Who will rule the runway (top three finalists)? Who do you want to win?
3) I proclaim our first recipe topic: soups.
My current favorite take on the classic butternut squash soup is the following super-easy recipe. The soup is creamy, without having to add cream, and has that sweet spiciness of anise that smells really good.
2/3 cup chopped shallot/onion
1 garlic clove thinly sliced
3 whole star anise
2 T. unsalted butter
1 3/4 lb. butternut squash (cut into pieces)
4 c. chicken stock/water
Method:
1) Cook onion, garlic, and anise in butter in 3 qt saucepan over moderate heat until shallot is softened, about 5 minutes.
2) Add squash, stock/water, and simmer, uncovered until squash is tender about 20 minutes. Remove star anise.
3) Puree soup in 2 batches in a blender until very smooth, about 1 minute. Serve warm.

1) I'd recommend a Guns'n'Roses or Bon Jovi 'greatest hits' collection, but I'm big on 80s nostalgia right now. I already gave you some Billy Idol :P
If you want newer stuff, isn't that band Le Tigre supposed to be dance-able? I haven't listened to any of their songs though.
My favorite pop-rock song is "No Sleep Tonight" by The Faders, which I've heard on Veronica Mars, but apparently it was on the soundtrack to Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants -- but I don't remember it from the movie?
2) You know my answers already. But they change frequently. I may actually be pulling for Santino because he's become so goddamn pathetic nowadays. I would love if Nick, Daniel V, Chloe and Santino could all have a go. And Andrae too. But alas.
3) Ramen plus frozen dumplings plus soy sauce plus chili oil equals heaven.
Hello Friends!
(third time will be the charm....)
1) Greg has re-introduced me to Cake and I am totally digging "Short skirt/long jacket" and "Rock and roll lifestyle." They are great for those times of "Incubate at 65 °C for 10 minutes, vortexing every minute." I did that a lot last week. A. Lot.
2) I can see Bravo kicking off either Chloe or Nick in the next couple of weeks just to mess with us. But if it were up to me, I'd like to see Nick, Chloe and Daniel V. (Although I have nothing against Andrae either.)
3) My brother gave me a dutch oven for Xmas and I used it a few weeks ago to make a very hearty bean and pasta soup. It involved bacon. Yummmmmmmmy. I chronicled the whole thing with pictures... maybe I can figure out how to get those to y'all...
Smooches.
regarding...
1) yeah. purchasing the x&y...latest of coldplay matched quite well with needing "breakup" music to listen too (ooh...anyone intrigued?) therefore, i would go down to the "city" and get any mixed reggaeton cd bootlegged off the street or get a good dose of tego calderon and you'll get some upbeat mostly meaningless a*sthumping going. ;) you'd think the whole country just discovered reggaeton but you know yours truly was shakin that a*s to it back in '96!
Man, I wish editing comments were possible. Deletion feels so sneaky.
I think in 1996 it was impossible for most to believe in the fusion of Latin and Caribbean music :P But you know what? I just heard a NY deejay ask why he should be playing so much reggaeton when most of the audience doesn't know Spanish. *sigh*
J? Coldplay? I'll forgive you because it was breakup music.
thanks zuppe. their sensitive and personal vocal delivery paired with their anthemic drums and guitars set the mood for a good breakup tantrum.
and no one should be held accountable for what they listen to during a breakup. no one!
is a dutch oven the same as a slow cooker (who needs the real simple now)?
sony chak -- dutch ovens are usually cast iron (although i think there are aluminum ones now) which can go on your stove top, into the oven and even onto a grill (if you're lucky enough to have one of those). i think they get their name 'cause if you use them on the grill, you can have a little "oven" even though you're in the great out-doors.
the bean and pasta soup i made could easily be made in a regular pot, a slow cooker, etc. i think it helped make the soup have a more "smokey" flavor from the bacon.
belated i know... i predict daniel v, santino, and chloe. tonight might prove me wrong though.
methinks you're right. unless kara blows santino out the water. poor nikolaki :( but he really does favor the asymmetrical fishtail hem more than anyone should, maybe: http://www.nikolakidesign.com/womens.html
