How about a summer reading selection? Maybe something between Opal Mehta and Paradise Lost . . . A slightly more grown up version of this old favorite?
a.c.! -- i LOVE "from the mixed-up files..."! it always makes me smile and feel all warm inside just thinking about it...
as for current suggestions... i am in love with david mitchell. although i haven't yet read his newest book black swan green, i loved cloud atlas, and was entirely blown away by number9dream. there is energy in his work -- pizzaz, you might say, but also good ol' narrative that keeps you turning the page.
and if you're very much hankering for a "code" to break, a la "the mixed-up files," might i suggest the code book which is what i am currently working my way through. lotsa fun anecdotes about how people throughout history tried to keep things secret. some of the stories actually tug at a few heart-strings!
have you read jasper fforde's works, which zuppe kindly turned me on to? zany, literary and fun!
i love phillip pullman's his dark material trilogy, but fear it may be too children/ fantasy for you tastes. it is very well-written and compelling though.
my favorite gentially trashy novelist is mary stewart-- the equivalent of watching a doris day pic with a touch of daphne dumaurier thrown in. "9 coaches waiting" is a good one to start with.
actually... the reason i picked up "the code book" was that i was hankering for some more code-breaking post da vinci code... i would love to do a lil' book club with you two gals... i'll try to think of something... but i'm very open to others suggestions... fiction? would that be good with everyone?
cowgirl I'm still in the first 1/10th of 'On Beauty' by Zadie Smith. I like it, but I'm just not into reading these days because it doesn't kill enough brain cells for me like TV does.
If I were part of a club though, maybe I could be convinced to retain some aforementioned cells. And don't worry, I won't go and drag everyone down to the lowest common denominator with any "action" books.
how about "out of africa" by isak dineson? Before you throw the po-co lit critique at me, hear me out: despite the undertones of courageous travels to the "dark continent", I think it is a good love story with a fiesty, independent heroine and complex relationships between the main characters.
