I saw this a couple of weeks ago! don't know about the best movie of the year...we still have a few more months to go ;) But Gosling and Epps were incredible. I'm still over the movie's racial, gender and class politics.
ponyboy, what do you mean you are "over" the movie's race, gender, and class politics? I thought it was quite nuanced in its portrayals of the similar pathologies of very different racial/class groups that stem from the failure of the civil rights dream and the lack of inspiring alternatives.
oh sorry! meant to say i'm still "pondering over" the racial/gender/class politics of the movie. some of the vibes of the relationship between the teacher and the girl were definitely disturbing and i'm not sure i understood completely the interspersed videos/speeches by the students. i thought they could have done a bit more with the scene when the teacher confronts the drug dealer in terms of race and class. but yes, overall, the movie did take a fairly nuanced, and un-cliched look at race and class, gender wasn't so much explored i guess.
this will definitely have to go on my list of movies to watch... i have to admit, i totally assumed this movie was something about the WWF.... but i think the movie that i am totally waiting for right now is M.A. -- see my new post!
